Dear Mr Wise,

Thanks for you note & receipt of my subscription. I should indeed appreciate more leisure in which to indulge myself in literary discussion & studies, but my duties here are imperative tho-[overleaf] quite voluntary & by temperament I am somewhat intense & extravagant. I generally [indec] day before the thought of recouping enters my mind. The idea of 24 hours in bed disgusts me & so, when ill, I promptly decide in favor of life & activity, take a few hours rest in addition to my usual quantum, & get up again with a new lease of life.

In regard to the society I hope you are gaining numbers. The only meeting I have had to privilege of attending was remarkably interesting & extremely well supported, in numbers as in talent. It is interesting to see how the advanced thought of one generation becomes the embryo of orthodoxy in succeeding ones. Mark the thought - forms of our own day with all its Shelleyan aspects - vegetarianism, temperance, Humanitarianism, the franchise, Women's suffrage, the marriage question & other old world doctrines of Reincarnation & Karma (ethical causation) which are gaining ground [overleaf] so rapidly. Of course there are those students of Shelley who will be little affected in their opinions by his writings, but I venture to say that the numbers will be few who are not affected towards altruism, & a broader line of thought & greater flexibility of creed, by his influence. I wish you every success & am [overleaf] dear sir,
yours faithfully
W [?].R. Old.
