At first thought by some to be fragment of icon frame due to the slot in the back, but after tests at BM was proved to be Roman. Also it was said by the initial seller to have come from the Roman stratum under a bombed building in Cologne together with its stylus. The slot in the back is thought to have rested on a length of wood to keep it steady. Very unusual, but not unknown (per Astarte Gallery).
