Quills were usually purchased in bundles, often uncut. With the introduction of highly mechanised quill-cutting machines, became just another packaged commodity and boxes such as this became the convenient way to buy them. Early 20th century.

Some quills in boxes were partly hand-cut, but eventually all were mechanised.
