Alan Cole
This type of pen was patented by Nicholas Bion in around 1689. He called it 'La plume sans fin' - the endless pen. It depends on air pressure like modern fountain pens The shaft is filled with ink. There is a weight inside the shaft that allows a fixed flow of ink through a slanted bore onto the quill nib.
When one screws the cap on an internal screw is wound into the centre of the nib, thus preventing any leakages - brilliant.
I have often used this pen with the original quill nib for special occasions and it writes more smoothly and easily than almost any modern fountain pen.
One of my five favourite items from the collection.
