Writing in the West

23. Seventeenth-century penner

Penner, seventeenth century writing set

Seventeenth-century penner, 2012-110

This is the 1650-80 Penner from which quill illustrated in a previous page was taken. The set consists of a turned bone inkwell, sander, knife (which screws into the top of its horn base) & quill, in a cuir bouilli (boiled leather) case. The knife would have been used to re-trim the quill as necessary, while the sander would have been used to shake fine sand over newly-written surface to help dry the ink.
