20. Sion Abbey leaf

Illuminated Sion Abbey Bible 13th c. Judges 7-9

Illuminated leaf, vellum, of the Book of Judges, 7-9 from Sion Abbey bible, 13th century. Two columns per page, 49 lines per column. Written on very fine vellum in dark brown ink with capital letters and decorations in red and blue ink.

The additions in silverpoint at the bottom of the page were made by a reader of the text. ‘The Defeat of Midian, the pursuit of Midian, Gideon makes an ephod’.  These remarks must have been written in the Bible after it had been purchased by Sion Abbey and had become a study Bible.
